Partial knee replacement with the OxfordTM Knee affords qualified patients at Tucker Orthopedics with a procedure that works just as well as a total knee replacement with several important advantages.
Conditions such as tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, Achilles tendinitis, and patellar tendinitis are all painful degenerative conditions where tendons, the strong sinewy bonds between muscles and bones, develop microscopic tears and start to fall apart. This causes inflammation (thickening, swelling, and pain) of the tendon.
Inflammation is the process that begins the healing of tissues, and usually is followed by an increase in blood flow with the formation of new tiny blood vessels that allow regenerative healing when blood borne growth factors enter the area. However, this process does not reliably occur when the area has a poor blood supply. Indeed, most cases of tendinitis occur in these areas of the body.
Your bloodstream contains a multitude of these growth factors proteins that promote the healthy growth, maintenance, and even regeneration of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. By physically concentrating and injecting these elements into diseased tendons, it is possible in many cases to coax these tissues to heal and regenerate without traditional surgical techniques.
ACP is simply your own blood, placed into a centrifuge with a sterile conditioning agent, and separated into the plasma (the liquid and protein elements of your blood minus the red blood cells) but with the tiny blood clotting cells called platelets that contain an important growth factor called PGF or platelet-derived growth factor. After numbing the area with local anesthetic, the ACP is then injected directly into the diseased tendon. This is an office based procedure.
While results are very encouraging, with resolution of pain and clinical healing demonstrated in the majority of patients, most insurance plans do not cover this service. Tucker Orthopedics is pleased to offer the ACP procedure to our patients as an alternative to surgery and endeavors to keep the cost very reasonable especially when compared to the cost, risk, and morbidity associated with surgery. The procedure seems to be most helpful for tendinitis, but it can also be considered for ligament sprains and in the future may be used to treat some forms of arthritis.
